You must have found a wrapping material, usually on CDs and DVDs, made mainly of polyolefin or PVC and that can be easily bought on the market. This is called "shrink wrap." It works by shrinking and wrapping tightly around the package when heated. It is used in all types of packaging in addition to CDs and DVDs such as:
1. soda cans,
2. books,
3. cardboard boxes,
4. gift baskets,
5. documents, etc.
It is also used to cover and store some foods such as meats and vegetables. Electrical wiring and even boats can be covered and preserved with shrink film. Shrink wrap is a viable option for combining packages.
This multi-purpose and versatile packaging material follows a simple packaging method that remains the same. It does not depend on the size of the package you need to wrap. All that needs to be done is to measure the film, cover the package with it, and then apply heat to make the film adhere to the object.
To wrap small packages at home, you can easily buy the shrink film at any store near you. All you have to do is measure it according to the size of the package, wrap it, and then apply heat to it with the help of a hair dryer to make it stick securely.
For wrapping larger objects, this do-it-yourself method is not good enough. For larger packages, you will need to purchase shrink wrap machines from your local market.
In the early days, shrink wrap machines were only available in factories and warehouses, but this is no longer the case. Smaller and cheaper alternatives are now available that have replaced the heavy and complex counterparts.
You can find two different types of automatic shrink packing machine on the market that are not only easy to use but also quite inexpensive. These are;
1. I-Bar Shrink Wrap Sealants and
2. L-bar shrink wrap sealers.
If the package or item to be sealed is small to medium volume, then the best option would be to opt for an I-bar shrink wrap sealer. This machine uses a single bar to seal the film. This bar is lowered onto the film and a required surface area is cut out which is then glued to the package with the help of a heat gun.
In cases where the package or item to be sealed is a larger volume L-bar shrink wrap, it is used. Most large companies use this type of machine for shrink wrapping. It's called an L bar because the bar used to cut the film is shaped like the letter "L". Use a heat tunnel to seal the wrap.
