Top 10 Questions Your Wedding Photographer Should Ask

During each consultation with a potential client, the bride opens her wedding planner and finds her copy of the top ten questions to ask a wedding photographer.

No question is a bad question. I will politely answer any questions you ask. But these top ten lists printed in wedding magazines don't go far enough. So, take your list of ten questions and add a few more than what I have written in this article. They will greatly improve the information you get from photographers.

Do you accept lists of family portraits?

Every photographer should accept this list. It is essential to getting the job you hired for. Write down the name of each family member that will appear in each portrait. Review the list with your photographer and he will tell you how long it will take to take each photo.

Do you have liability insurance? Each wedding vendor must have a minimum liability policy of $ 1 million. This insurance covers accidents or damages that the photographer may cause while working. You don't want to end up being responsible for their damages. Protect yourself.

Will you make changes to the contract?

Many photographers are opposed to changing their contracts for any reason. You don't have to work with them. Never sign an agreement that you are uncomfortable with. I suggest the following list of additions to each photography contact.

1. The photographer you are hiring must be explicitly named as the photographer who will photograph your wedding.

2. The contract must include any advance payment as a deposit. I shouldn't say retainer. In some states, you may have a hard time getting an advance refunded if the photographer does not honor the contract.

3. You should set limitations on what you should not photograph, such as the naked bride or groom.

4. If you receive digital negatives in the package, you will need the photographer to grant you a copyright license to use the digital files for unlimited personal prints.

5. The contract will have a "Default" section. You must indicate that you are entitled to a full refund of all monies paid, including the deposit, in case the photographer does not photograph your wedding.

How do you provide wedding proofs?

Few photographers are already providing hard copy evidence. Every photographer I know posts the photos to a private web gallery or sends a DVD to the client. I do both. The web gallery accepts print orders from the couple and their miami wedding photographer, and the DVD includes all photos in printable format.

How long will the wedding photos be online? Every service is different. They must be online for a minimum of one year.

What file format do you record?

Every professional photographer will use the RAW setting, which gives the client the best possible results. This file format captures 4096 levels of color per channel. The JPEG format, used by all point-and-shoot cameras, captures 256 levels. That's a big difference in the subtleties of the color tone within an object.

RAW has the highest dynamic range, which means that you will see a lot of detail in the brightest and darkest areas of a photo.
